France - October 2017
The most recent visit took place during October when a party of 24 travelled from Carnoustie to Maule. The start of the visit took the form of a 2 day visit to the Loire area where a number of sights were taken in. These included the Chateaux at Chambord, Chenonceau, le Clos Luce and Chaumont-sur-Loire and their beautiful gardens were amazing at this time of the year with the glorious autumn colours. Leonardo da Vinci spent time in this area and his art is evident at les Clos Luce, both in the castle and the gardens. There was also time to visit La Cave aux Fouees which is a restaurant inside a large cave. There was also time - of course - to sample some of the wines of the area.
On returning to Maule to there was a ceremony held to mark the 25th Anniversary of the twinning charter between Maule and Carnoustie at which Jan Scott, Vice Chair of the Carnoustie Association on behalf of Carnoustie Community Council presented a glass plaque to mark the occasion to Michele Contet, Chair of the Maule Association, Laurent Richard, Mayor of Maule and Jean-Christophe Charbit, Mayor of Aulney. A picture of the presentation is shown below. There was further entertainment and a chance to visit the museum in Maule and a photographic exhibition of images taken in Carnoustie and Scotland in general during the visit there in April.
Saturday evening saw a social evening with music, dancing and of course amazing food. There were also 2 birthday cakes baked for the event - one for the charter with Maule and the other to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Aulney-sur-Mauldre becoming part of the association. The candles on each were duly blown out by Jan Scott and Michele Conte (pictured below). During the evening Jan was presented with a plaque from Michele to mark the occasion. Entertainment was provided from both sides of the channel and Scottish and French dancing also kept everyone busy. Once again our French friends proved their hospitality is superb and an amazing evening was had by all.
The following day there was a joint committee meeting where future visits and events were discussed and the result of some of these will be notified via this site as and when details are firmed up.
The final visit was to Giverney to see Monet's house and gardens. The final 'Au Revoir' took place with the traditional 'Auld Lang Syne' at the Salle de Fette in Maule before the Carnoustie travellers return to Carnoustie. There new members travelling on this occasions so new friendships were made and some older ones re-visited. As always the whole visit was a triumph of French organisation and thoroughly enjoyed by all on both sides.
Photographs of the visit are shown below.
